Review: City Cruises "River Red Rover"
I love the River Thames - the peaceful ebb and flow of the water and amazing buildings and bridges that line the river.
Having bought a City Cruises "River Red Rover" ticket online, I headed down to Waterloo Pier (now called Millenium Pier) just next to the London Eye. I exchanged my voucher at the ticket booth and went down to the pier to wait for a boat. It wasn't a long wait - the river keeps a different pace from the rest of London and I passed the time (about 20 minutes) watching other boats steaming up and down.
City Cruises have a few diffferent boats, but the most common is a modern, wheelchair-friendly "RiverLiner" with open upper deck and lower saloon with panoramic windows, that operate between Westminster, Waterloo, Tower and Greenwich Piers. The boats can get quite busy and are often filled with large tour groups, but it really didn't bother me - you can wonder around the boat and there is a downstairs bar that provides snacks and light refreshments.
From Waterloo Pier, we headed down to Tower Pier, where you can jump off to visit the Tower of London, then continued under Tower Bridge and downstream to Greenwich. En-route, the boat crew give a commentary on the various bridges and buildings along the river - they're not professional guides, but I found the commentary light-hearted and interesting. At Greenwich you can jump off and explore Greenwich Village, visit the Maritime Museum or walk through the park to the Royal Observatory. I spend about an hour wandering around the Village, stopping at a lovely little pub for lunch, then headed back to the pier and jumped the next boat back up to Westminster. All in all a most relaxing day out.
